As we approach the end of January, proclaimed nationally as Human Trafficking Awareness Month, the Bucks County District Attorney’s Office and Bensalem Police would like to remind the community on how they can help raise awareness to stop the exploitation of people for the purpose of prostitution, forced labor, slavery, and other acts against their will.
Deputy District Attorney Chelsey Jackman, who runs the DA’s human trafficking division, offered signs the community should be aware of that may indicate someone is the victim of human trafficking: minors who are runaways, juveniles who are in hotels, people who are unfamiliar with their surroundings, people who don’t have documentation like a passport or identification, someone who doesn’t make eye contact when they are in the presence of their potential trafficker and massage parlors with unusual hours. “If you come across these types of cases, if you see something say something,” she said. “Allow the police to get involved so that we can investigate to see if human trafficking is going on. But if you want to get involved on a community level, the BCAT Bucks Coalition Against Trafficking is a group of professionals and community members who together combine efforts to eradicate human trafficking in Bucks County and rehabilitate any victims who have been identified.” Together we can help stop human trafficking!
